Are you looking for a full time Internship that you’ll dive into the fascinating world of organizing and digitizing historic records for NASA’s Life Sciences Data Archive (LSDA) project?  You’ll be at the forefront of preserving valuable NASA records, sorting through materials from past life sciences research, and ensuring their long-term digital preservation. Your role will involve collaborating with various teams, conducting research on best practices, and contributing to the development of a digital research data repository. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work on impactful projects that contribute to NASA’s rich scientific legacy.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to support the Human Research Program’s Life Sciences Data Archive (LSDA) project. The candidate will be able to confer with the other Archivists currently supporting the LSDA regarding how best to achieve the responsibilities and goals outlined below.

The candidate will be responsible for the organization, inventory, description, and digitization (as required) of unprocessed LSDA records and collections comprised of material in varying formats as outlined in the Media Migration Plan. Specific duties include sorting and cataloging the materials in the collection that were produced by life sciences research studies and programs; scanning documents that will be added to the archive; and working with personnel from records management, JSC library, the imagery lab, or the history office to determine the appropriate disposition of records outside the scope of LSDA holdings. Must be skilled in using the internet to search NASA and other resources to determine if records in LSDA possessions are archived in other locations. The goal of the tasks is the long-term digital preservation of these NASA records.

The candidate will also perform a research project identifying best practices in the field on how to incorporate records/materials from historic NASA life sciences experiments into an existing digital research data repository. Topics will include identification of appropriate metadata fields for such records, practices for harmonizing historic science terminology with current terminology, and how to represent contextual records in a digital research data repository catalog system. The deliverable for this project will be in the form an report and/or presentation outlining recommendations.

A portion of the information in these records may be made accessible via a public website for both NASA personnel and the research community at large. Therefore, the candidate may also be required to populate the LSDA databases with metadata describing the records retained by the LSDA.

LSDA includes a large information technology component, the successful candidate may also assist in developing software requirements for the LSDA data management applications.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED:

  • Enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Information Sciences or Library Sciences.

DESIRED:

  • Experience with life sciences or medical records management or data cataloging
  • Experience using R/RStudio or Python
  • Knowledge of regulatory and legislative requirements related to PII and data privacy laws
  • Familiarity with the Investigation Study Assay (ISA) metadata model
  • Familiarity with cultural heritage imaging standards/workflows such as Federal Agencies Digital Guideline Imitative (FADGI) or Metamorfoze

REQUIRED SKILLS/TRAINING

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with project managers, project leads, customers, and with contract colleagues is essential.
  • Reliable and dependable work habits and the dedication to get the job done.
  • Ability to attain and maintain respect and confidence of the customer and contract personnel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams)
  • Proficient in the use of the internet
  • Ability to take direction and work independently, creatively, and efficiently
  • Highly developed organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Skilled at organizing and facilitating problem-solving discussions

DESIRED:

  • Experience working with relational databases or digital repositories
  • Experience developing data model and ontologies
  • Experience working with cultural heritage imaging workflows

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health, and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel
  • Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies, and procedures
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company
  • Responsible for completing all assigned training
  • Assist the project’s media migration team with inventory of historic records/materials found in the project’s legacy media collections
  • Assist with assessment of records to determine their relevancy to buying down human system risks on crewed missions in upcoming flight programs
  • Perform scanning of records or materials selected for digitization
  • Conduct research project to identify best practices for integrating historic datasets and contextual records into an operational digital research data repository
  • Input and update research study data into various databases and perform data updates and audits
  • Respond to customer’s data inquiries and concerns, addressing issues promptly
  • Maintain confidentiality of all medical and personal information to which access has been granted
  • Provide weekly status reports of work activities to project lead
